Brother Matthew Taveres (Phi Nu Chi)

On January 30, 2024, Brother Matthew Tavares (Phi Nu Chi, 2024) received the “Outstanding IFC President” award as part of the 2023 Interfraternity Council (IFC) Awards. This award recognizes IFC Presidents whose leadership has been a driving force for growth, positive change and interfraternalism on their campus. Matthew is one of twelve winners this year and was selected from a field of thousands of applicants. Shortly after the announcement, we spoke with Brother Tavares to ask him some questions about his journey through Greek Life at West Chester University.

Q: What inspired you to run for IFC President? What were some notable accomplishments of your presidency?

I think what really inspired me to run for IFC President was the love for the IFC Community at West Chester University (WCU). I met so many great guys in our community prior to being elected and this made me want to work with them further. It truly was an honor to be able to assist them in achieving their goals.”

Q: What positions did you hold in Alpha Chi Rho and how did those help you in your IFC presidency?

“Prior to becoming IFC President I served as Alpha Chi Rho’s Recruitment Chair, Secretary and President. I also served two prior years on the IFC Board as Vice President Of Academics and Leadership as well as Vice President Of Operations. Those experiences really helped me during my IFC President term because those positions allowed me to see the different parts of a Chapter/organization that make it work. I was able to use my knowledge in prior leadership positions to solve dilemmas and communicate effectively with the IFC Community as a whole.”

Q: What words of wisdom or encouragement would you give to other resident Brothers that are debating getting involved with IFC?

“I strongly recommend that any undergraduate Brothers give it a shot. The IFC Executive Board is an unforgettable experience. It will test your leadership skills and allow you to meet so many amazing people!”

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add or anyone you’d like to shout-out?

“I must add that none of my achievements or goals could have been obtained without the constant support of my amazing parents, my Greek Advisor Stephen Hopson, and of course the Brothers of Phi Nu Chi at West Chester! I could list many more people but thank you to everyone who has shown me love and support throughout my Greek Life experience at WCU!”

Shortly before publication, Brother Taveres was recognized as a Greek Leader of Distinction as part of the 2024 Northeast Greek Leadership Association’s annual conference! Matthew attended NGLA last year and learned a lot through the educational sessions and new connections at other campuses. Alpha Chi Rho congratulates Brother Tavares again for his hard work and dedication to Alpha Chi Rho and the Greek Community at West Chester!
